Complete Pool Removal - Costs & Methods
By ProMatcher Staff
There are two primary methods for removing or demolishing your swimming pool: complete pool removal and partial pool removal . Both methods typically require a permit.
Complete Pool Removal Cost
Complete pool demolition is significantly more expensive than partial pool demolition. Our research tells us that complete pool demolition will cost in the range of $5,000-$15,000. However, costs can reach $20,000-$30,000 for large complex projects. Our ProMatcher Cost Reports may help give you an idea of how much complete pool removal costs in your area.
Complete Pool Demolition - How It's Done
Complete demolition is when the entire pool is removed (pool, piping, decking, electrical, etc.). Here are the typical steps required:
- Obtain permits (building and utility shut off permits).
- Remove all water from pool.
- Disconnect all utilities (water, gas, electric) from the pool.
- Using heavy equipment, the pool is broken, demolished, and cut into pieces small enough to haul into a dumpster or dump truck. Many contractors have machines that are small enough to fit through fence gates and narrow spaces.
- All of the waste material is removed from the site (none remains or is buried).
- Photographs are taken of the empty hole (to serve as evidence that the pool was completely removed). This is good for when you sell the property or try to pull a permit to build an addition or structure over the pool site.
- The hole is filled with gravel and soil, compacted to prevent future settlement.
- Topsoil is graded and tamped.
- Install sod or landscaping.
Most professional contractors believe that this is the best way to remove a pool because it is less likely to settle and is the only way you can use the area for a future structure.
In fact, many contractors will not do a partial demolition.
