Demolition & Sorting Grapples
By ProMatcher Staff
The above video is an example of a demolition and sorting grapple. This one is manufactured by Caterpillar.
Typical uses for grapples include:
- Breaking buildings - Hauling material and debris - Loading material and debris - Minor cutting - Precise picking and pulling - Tearing - Tree removal
Benefits of a grapple and things you should ask yourself about what you want in a grapple:
- Can it rotate 360 degrees, which allows the operator to grab and any angle without moving the machine.
- Are the grapple jaws synchronized (like the Caterpillar) so they can open and close in a repeatable manner. This improved workflow because the operator has predictability built into the machine.
- How fast do they clamp (grab). The faster they clamp, the higher the workflow.
- Does the grapple have edge to edge contact. If it does, then it can grab small items.
- Does it have an overbite stop (which will prevent jamming).
- How wide does the jaw open? The Caterpillar opens 7 feet.
- Does it have a smooth profile so that material drops out easily?
- Does it have replaceable edges?
